The Department of Surgery is a large clinical academic department within the School of Medicine with broad reach across UW Medicine, the WWAMI region, nationally and internationally. The activities of the Department cross a broad spectrum of surgical clinical practice, education, and research with a mission to engage future residents and fellows, alumni, current and former faculty and friends of the Department about the strategic goals and accomplishments of the Department through a variety of communication channels and platforms. The purpose of this position is to develop, analyze and implement strategic marketing and communications initiatives that represent the Department of Surgery (DoS) at the highest level. The Program Administrator for Communications and provides communications, public relations, marketing, and advancement resources to support the clinical, educational and research missions of the Department of Surgery. This position will also work closely with other marketing, communications and advancement professionals across the School of Medicine (SoM) and UW Medicine to ensure consistent messaging that positions the UW as a leading institution. A proven track record of client management, campaign development, execution and reporting will be vital for success in this role. This position will report to the Vice Chair, Finance and Administration, with matrixed direction from the Chair of the Department. The duties of this position fall into three areas: 1) Development and execution of marketing strategy, including promotion of philanthropic opportunities = 50%; 2) Planning, creation and analysis of content strategies for communications = 30% 3) Related project management, such as the Web Governance committee = 10%; 4) Supervision of Public Information Specialist = 10%. POSITION COMPLEXITIES: The Program Administrator for Marketing and Communications requires a dedicated and creative thinker with a track record of excellent verbal and written communication skills who can manage multiple high-value projects at one time. A high level of organization and a keen understanding of Department’s mission is also critical, as the Program Administrator will be tasked with implementing a comprehensive marketing and communications strategic plan, maintaining a strong brand for the Department’s programs and activities, and developing and managing external communications in close collaboration with the UW Medicine communications team to share accurate and reliable information. POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY: The Department of Surgery is one of the most highly visible clinical departments in the nation. The Program Administrator serves as a representative of the Department and UW in communications with internal and external individuals and organizations. Clear and comprehensive coverage of Department research, education, training and outreach activities serves to enhance potential public and private funding for the Department and for UW.
