Senior Writer/Editor, Content Strategy - University Communications and Marketing

The Senior Writer will conceptualize, develop and execute multiple, strategic communications pieces in support of initiatives that cross institutional boundaries and disciplines, and represent some of the university's highest priorities. Reporting to the Director, Content Strategy, the Senior Writer will work closely with members of the University Communications and Marketing division, liaise with communications staff across the university and work collaboratively with senior administrators in departments, schools, colleges and libraries.
Responsibilities will include conceiving, writing and editing stories for the university website and other vehicles and project managing the production of dynamic content that supports the CMU brand and helps to raise the visibility and reputation of the university. This includes feature stories, student and faculty profiles, multimedia scripts, social posts and other content elements.
Your Core Responsibilities will include:
Conceive, write and edit stories linked to the editorial calendar and strategic priorities of the institution.
Creatively incorporate innovative approaches to storytelling to demonstrate integration of content across multiple channels, including writing for social media and collaborating with colleagues to develop multimedia assets.
Work closely with other campus communicators to conceive and coordinate stories that reach key target audiences.
Collaborate in building messaging platforms for key strategic areas.
Conduct research and interviews and develop high quality articles and other content for university channels, and perform fact-checking and consultation to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the material.
Participate in content and communications planning meetings, content leadership team meetings, and senior staff meetings to champion messaging through coverage, positioning or reference to major initiatives and priorities, and coordinating selected projects as needed.
Provide writing, research and fact-checking support for media campaigns, major announcements and high-level initiatives.
Develop content for confidential, sensitive or embargoed events with prudence, discretion and appropriate caution.
Work with supervisors to provide guidance and support to writers and editors on writing quality, style, substance and messaging.
Monitor relevant news and global events to identify potential opportunities, concerns and interests for the university.
Observe relevant communications trends and developments that might influence, encourage or otherwise affect the university's marketing and communications efforts, and provide updates and background information as needed.
May assist in the supervision of junior level writers/editors.
Undertake other critical writing tasks as assigned.

Shown ability to extract key facts and relevant material from complex information and disparate sources, and compile the same into clear information for a wide range of audiences
Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet tight deadlines
Willingness to take ownership for quality and outcomes on complex university communications needs
Excellent writing, editing and fact-checking skills. Ability to develop compelling, concise and clear material within tight deadlines and in line with applicable style guides
Experience interviewing diverse subjects for stories, background information or fact-checking
Experience in print, online or broadcast journalism or other forms of public communication
Familiarity with or experience working in higher education institutions
Experience balancing multiple projects simultaneously and aligning with colleagues on priorities; adaptability and flexibility in direct responsibilities and collaborative work
